[Publications] Reviews of The Vampire Diaries, Hellcats, D.E.B.S., Honda Shadows, and more

I have been reviewing things lately. Here are links to those reviews.

For Karen Healey’s recent Reviewathon fundraiser, I reviewed

+ Urban Decay’s Deluxe Shadow Box, Honda Shadows, Sons of Anarchy, D.E.B.S., and The Squad by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, and

+ Hellcats, which Karen and I reviewed together in a conversation format.

I am reviewing The Vampire Diaries for Innsmouth Free Press again this season. Here are my reviews so far.

+ Lies and Lying Liars: Review of The Vampire Diaries 2.1: “The Return”

+ Carnivals and Boardwalks, Prime Hunting Grounds: The Vampire Diaries 2.02: “Brave New World”

+ A Howling Good Time: A Review of The Vampire Diaries 2.03: “Bad Moon Rising”

[Publications] The Vampire Diaries reviews

Well, that was an interesting first season, wasn’t it? Despite my problems with the show and its treatment of women in particular — and despite the fact that it is sometimes ridiculous — I really like it and am looking forward to next season, though I definitely need a break from its issues for awhile.

However, here are the last of the reviews I wrote for Innsmouth Free Press:

+ Control is an Illusion: Review: The Vampire Diaries 1.18: “Under Control”

+ That’s a Miss, Mystic Falls: Review of The Vampire Diaries 1.19: “Miss Mystic Falls”

+ Family Can Really Suck: The Vampire Diaries 1.20: “Blood Brothers”

+ Mommy Dearest: The Vampire Diaries 1.21: “Isobel”

+ (Kill All the) Founders Day: The Vampire Diaries 1.22: “Founders’ Day”

Wow, you can really tell I’m horrible at titles and running out of vampire puns at this point. (In part because the show was using the puns as titles already.)

So what did you all think of The Vampire Diaries season one? Will you be watching season two? If you haven’t watched season one yet, do you plan on catching up over the break?

[Publications] Book and TV reviews

Internets! I have written things lately! (Actually, I have written a lot of things lately, but these are things you can read for free right now!) I will collect some of them for you here.

Review of Witch Dreams by Vivian Vande Velde at Broad Universe’s Broadsheet. My favorite V3 book is actually Heir Apparent, but I really enjoyed Witch Dreams as well. It’s flawed, and I’m pretty clear about those flaws in the review, but despite that, it captures your attention as you read it.

Excerpt: The beauty of the story is in the descriptions of the dreams themselves, the relationship between Nyssa and her older brother, and Nyssa herself. She’s a selfish child who grows into a driven young woman, and her flaws and strengths combine to make her an interesting character.

(For general reference, I’m reviewing each episode of The Vampire Diaries at Innsmouth Free Press. You can view all the reviews here.)

Here are reviews of the last few episodes of The Vampire Diaries:

+ Everyone Needs a Mystical Ring: Review of The Vampire Diaries 1.15: “A Few Good Men”

+ Here Comes the Badass: Review of The Vampire Diaries: 1.16: “There Goes the Neighborhood”

+ It’s Like a Metaphor or Something. Review of The Vampire Diaries 1.17: “Let the Right One In”

Warning, there are spoilers. (I’m also kind of giddy in that last one, because I have high hopes that something I’ve been waiting for will happen in episode 1.18. Maybe. It airs tonight, so we’ll know soon!) I do frequently find TVD to be ridiculous and cheesy, plus it has issues with women who embrace their sexuality (and frequently with women who are supernaturally powerful), but it is also a lot of fun.
