What are you currently reading?

Midnight Exposure by Melinda Leigh

I want to like this a lot more than I do — or I like it a lot despite a number of issues? I’m not sure. It’s a suspense set in Maine, it references Stephen King, and there’s some really fun characters, but at the same time, there’s that ridiculous no one talks to each other honestly trope to force tension between the will they/won’t they couple, and there are some continuity errors that keep throwing me out of the story. I’m glad I’m reading it, though.

What did you recently finish reading?

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, More Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, and Scary Stories 3: More Tales to Chill Your Bones by Alvin Schwartz

No link for this one because I have the original versions with drawings by Stephen Gammell, which are out of print, and the artwork in the new versions is not nearly as creepy. (I only recently purchased these used, because I missed them, but also because I’m looking for a young adult horror short story I read as a kid, and I thought it was in one of these books. It is not. All I remember at the moment is that there was a creature [I want to say it was a werewolf, but that just may be my love of werewolves] scratching at the walls of a house and there were at least two kids inside while their parents were gone. I think the main character was a pre-teen or a teen girl, and at one point she shuts the creature’s paw in the window, forcing it to retreat. The scratching comes back, though, and she’s up in a loft(?) with her sibling, and they hear the window open and the creature coming for them, and the paw just reaches the top of the ladder when headlights sweep over it, their parents are home, and the creature flees. Anyone recognize this?)

What do you think you’ll read next?

The Vinyl Princess by Yvonne Prinz and Glitter & Mayhem edited by John Klima, Lynne M. Thomas, & Michael Damian Thomas

I backed the Glitter & Mayhem Kickstarter campaign, so I’ve already read the Seanan McGuire story, and it is amazing. I’m looking forward to reading more. (I’m also looking forward to framing my cover artwork print and hanging it in my living room. The walls are pretty bare right now.)
